Matthew is a proud Newfoundlander with an unwavering attachment to the Atlantic Coast. His connection to the east coast is evident through his academic research and focus on the capacity of landscape and ecology to act as a catalyst in economic diversification and rural regeneration. Matthew holds degrees in Urban Planning from the University of Waterloo, a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Design Studies in Urbanism, Landscape, and Ecology from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with distinction. Professionally, Matthew spent the first seven years of practice in Boston as an Associate with the award-winning landscape firm, Stimson Studio, before returning to Atlantic Canada.

Matthew’s work consistently focusses on the development of a strong and thoughtful narrative which guides the project’s evolution from concept to implementation, and creates a deep connection to site and context. His strong attention to detail results in unique and contemporary expressions of local and regional materials in every project. Matthew has been involved in many contemporary projects throughout the Maritimes that include Queen’s Marque, Shediac Pension Centre Landscape, Harriet Irving Library Rose Garden, Halifax Common Aquatic Facility, and a number of residential estates along the North East coast. Matthew’s passion for design is complemented by his ability to communicate ideas and concepts to clients, stakeholders, and community groups, and effectively build consensus.
